* EQUIVALENT to an associate degree, you must have transcripts showing that you have 96-Quarter Hours or 63 Semester Hours of Post Secondary Education at a college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In addition, you have to have taken the following Core Classes:

  • 2 - College English classes
  • 1 - College Math class
  • 2 - College Science or Technology classes
  • 1 - Social Studies class
  • 1 - Humanity class

OJT - If you are a veteran, it is possible that you qualify for the OJT Program through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Signing Bonus:

New officers hired by the Columbus Police Department are eligible for a signing bonus of $2,000. Newly hired officers will be paid this bonus in 4 equal installments of $500 as follows:

  (a) (a) Newly hired officers who are already Georgia Certified Basic Peace Officer will receive their first $500 installment on their first paycheck. Thereafter, the officer will receive their remaining 3 Installments of $500 each every six months provided they are meeting the minimum standards of the department.

  (b) (b) Non-certified officers after having been employed for six months and having completed all State Mandated POST Requirements for Basic Peace Officer Certification will receive their first $500 installment. Thereafter, the officer will receive their remaining 3 installments of $500 each every six months provided they are meeting the minimum standards of the department.

  (c)Any officer having been previously employed by the department who is rehired shall not be eligible for a signing bonus..

Military Incentive:

New officers hired by the Columbus Police Department are eligible for the Military Incentive of $1,200.00. Newly hired officers will be paid this incentive in 3-equal installments of $400 as follows:

Officers must have honorable military service of at least four years; be employed for six months and having completed all State Mandated POST Requirements for Basic Peace Officer Certification will receive their first $400 installment. Thereafter, the officer will receive their 2 installments of $400 each every six months providing they are meeting the minimum standards of the department.

Any officer having been previously employed by the department who is rehired shall not be eligible for the Military Incentive.

POST Certification Incentive:

New officers hired by the Columbus Police Department who are Georgia POST Certified Peace Officers, ONLY, will be eligible for the POST Certification Incentive. This incentive will be paid in three installments of $800 (once annually) over a three-year period for a total of $2,400.00. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • POST Certified Peace Officer from the State of Georgia ONLY.

Any officer having been previously employed by the department who is rehired will have a one-year waiting period before being eligible for the POST Certification Incentive.

Effective July 1, 2015 all Columbus Police Officers will receive a salary increase based on years of service. Increases are implements as follows:

On Job Training (OJT)

If you are a veteran, it is possible that you qualify for the OJT program through the Department of Veterans Service

  • Relocation pay (over 50 miles) up to $1,000.00 (must have receipts).
